Instructions: Using crayons, markers, or paint and construction paper, decorate a paper plate to look like Santa's face; minus the beard (figure 1).
![]() Cut 6 small slits about 1 inch long along the bottom edge of the paper plate where santa's beard would be (figure 2).
![]() Using white construction paper, cut 24 strips. Each one should be about 1 inch wide and 6 inches long. Carefully thread a strip through one of the slits you cut in the paper plate. Glue the two ends of the strip together to form a circle. Continue this until you have a circle in each slit (figure 3).
![]() Now, you want to add 6 more paper chain circles onto the circles you just created to form the second row of Santa's beard. Slip the end of a strip of paper through one of the circles you made and glue the ends together. Continue this step and add another slip of paper to each circle you made previously. For the third row of paper chain circles, you need 5 paper strips. Slip one end of a strip through circles 1 and 2 in the second row (see figure 4). Glue the ends of the strip together. Take another strip of paper and slip in through circles 2 and 3 in the second row and glue the ends together. The third strip of paper will go through circles 3 and 4; the fourth strip will go through 4 and 5; and the fifth strip will go through 5 and 6.
![]() Follow the directions and picture above to make rows 4 and 5. Row 4 will use 4 strips of paper and row 5 will use 3 strips of paper. You Santa now has a beard with 24 paper chains! Hang your Santa up and remove one chain from his beard per day starting on December 1st. When your Santa's beard disappears, it is Christmas Eve! - See a larger photo of this craft completed by Deborah Kent's Class.
